Limitations

What is the line between excuses and limitations? It’s hard to say. It’s unrealistic to think that anyone can do anything, anytime – but so often we shut ourselves down with reminders of what we are not, without even giving it a shot.

By nature, there are certain things we’re good at, and certain things we’re not. But just because we’re not good at them doesn’t mean that they’re impossible. Venture out and push your limits, who knows what you might find?

A Life of Lists

Report cards, college applications, résumés. There’s always someone to please in the next step of life – teachers, bosses, award panels, etc. – and for the most part, we know what it takes to please them. The tests we study for, the extracurriculars we amass, the accolades we collect – is it out of genuine interest or to check off another box on some gigantic list of life?

But in the end, who’s really looking? And what will they say?

The Store of You

Oftentimes we look at those who are more successful than us in a certain area, whether in terms of making money, being heard, scoring more points, etc., and wonder what it is that we lack. We may attempt to imitate them in order to achieve similar results, or we may conclude that it’s a hopeless cause, since we simply don’t possess the same natural gifts. However, while one particular thing may not be a strength of ours, everyone has plenty of natural strengths – it’s only a matter of figuring out how to use them.

Two Boats at Once

Once we decide to carve our own paths, where do we go? Grad school or continue working? This industry or that one? Girl A or Girl B?

We’re constantly assaulted by a string of decisions. It’s such a paralyzing selection that we often don’t want to make a choice. Or, if we could only keep our options open, we don’t HAVE to make a choice.

But choosing everything is effectively choosing nothing, and choosing nothing is still a choice.

In Chinese, there is a saying “脚踏两条船” (stepping on two boats at once). It usually refers to cheating, but I think it applies to any decision – either way, there’s never a happy ending!

Out of the Underground

This is what happens when a recent college grad spends too much time on the subway.

Up until now, I’ve been following life goals that have been listed out for me, going down set tracks that countless others have been on before me.

Get good grades to get into a good college to get a good job. Now I’ve done it, I’ve made it! But…now what? For the first time, I have to venture off the tracks and choose for myself.

This is scary. So my first course of action? Make it into a cartoon.
